More Home Weatherization Information

Insulation

Insulation reduces heat loss and makes the home quieter and more comfortable. It can save from 10-20% of your heating bill. Insulation is rated by R-values (per inch): the higher the R-value the better.

Insulation Types

There are many types of insulation on the market. Each type and brand has a different R-value. Insulation comes in the form of batts, blankets, loosefill and rigid boards. Depending on the application, one type may be more appropriate to use than the other.

Windows

Windows are rated by U-values: the lower the number the better. Funding for window replacement is available only if your existing windows are either double-glazed with aluminum frames, or single glazed.

Window Types

Several factors affect the U-value of windows:
  • Type of glass
  • Number of panes
  • Width and gas between the panes
  • Frame and spacer bar materials
  • Low E (emissivity)
